The Asian Adult Adoptees of British Columbia (AAABC, “Triple ABC”) began in 2007 with a realization that within Western Canada, an adult adoptee organization did not exist. This was contrasted with the countless adoptee organizations in the United States, throughout Europe, and around the globe. Following learning and attending adult adoptee conferences all around the world, the benefits of such an organization became very apparent. Specifically, it led to an understanding of how an adult adoptee organization can strengthen the adoptee community and how this community can, in turn, give back to a new generation of adoptees.
With this new found knowledge, AAABC was formally established in 2008. A website was created and augmented with the most immediate and far reaching internet device, social networking. This network currently reaches Asian adoptees around the world.
Domestically, AAABC is dedicated to creating a community of Asian adult adoptees within British Columbia. Within this community Asian adoptees will gain knowledge and an understanding of their culture, traditions, and history. With this education adult adoptees will begin to celebrate their country of origin and take pride in its history and accomplishments – both past and present. AAABC provides a forum for discussion amongst adoptees to promote learning from others who share in a common experience. In addition, AAABC is dedicated to educating younger generations of adoptees and working with adoptive families.
The future of AAABC is limited only by imagination. AAABC provides a myriad of opportunities for not only the adult adoptees within BC, but also the new generation of adoptees and adoptive families. It is these possibilities of learning, growth, and connection that drive AAABC forward.
